I get health insurance through a company called Altrua HealthShare.

Technically, they’re not an insurance company; they are a health-sharing company. Members make a monthly contribution (similar to an insurance premium), which is placed into an escrow account. The contributed money is used to cover members’ healthcare needs.

Since Altrua HealthShare is not an insurance company, it can discriminate as to who it chooses as clients. If you have poor health, eat Big Macs three times a day, or jump out of planes for a living, the company can deny your application.

Fortunately for me, I limit my Big Mac consumption to approximately zero per year, and I don’t cannonball out of light aircraft from 12,000 feet. So I’ve been a satisfied and smiling Altrua client since 2008.

Altrua’s coverage is great, their service is top notch, and their rates are MUCH lower than my alternatives. And since I’ve been an Altrua HealthShare client, I’ve referred about 10 people I know who I believed would fit the company’s client criteria.

Many of the people I’ve referred are self-employed, so they don’t have employers to cover them, and would otherwise have to pay sky-high premiums by going through the Health Insurance Marketplace.
