Learn About Tom Peters, The Man Who Rants, Raves, And Screams
About Treating Customers & Employees Right. I Mean RIGHT!

Written by Rich Harshaw.

The first time I ever saw or heard of Tom Peters, it was a mind-blowing experience.

I was a senior at BYU’s Marriott School of Management in 1993, and life was hectic. Then move on to bigger, more important things as you become a practiced “change artist.” My wife was six months pregnant, I was trying to start my company exporting motor oil and food products to Taiwan (long story), and I was taking some random and unmemorable class that was necessary to finish my degree. I regularly fell asleep in class because it was either boring or I had been up at the crack of dawn sending or receiving faxes all over the world.

The teacher announced we’d be watching a video and dimmed the lights. Perfect. I’d be able to sleep without anyone noticing and without missing anything important.

Then some guy came on the screen and started ranting and screaming. He got so worked up in the first ten seconds I thought he was going to have a heart attack and die right there on screen. Take a look:

Will it blend? That is the question.

At least that’s the question Tom Dickson, former CEO of Blendtech has been asking since 2006, when he started his wildly successful video series with that same name on YouTube.

It’s so simple, it’s genius: To show people the raw blending power of his blenders, Tom takes odd, interesting, and unexpected household items and throws them into the blender and “lets it rip.”

The idea came from a new marketing director named George Wright. He’d seen Tom chopping up blocks of wood in their product testing laboratory. Wright was new, so unlike longtime employees who were used to seeing Tom grind odd objects into dust, he was blown away. Who would have thought a blender could blend wood into sawdust! $50 later, they created the first “Will it Blend” video of the Blendtech pulverizing marbles into a pile of white dust.

I’m either allergic to AC/DC, the rock band, or celery. I’m not quite sure which.

On February 2, 1982, my parents inexplicably let me go to an AC/DC concert with my older brother at Reunion Arena in Dallas. By today’s parenting standards, this would have been a Top-10-All-Time-Worst-Parenting-Decision worthy of a CPS custody hearing. But the early ‘80s were a different era; specifically, one of parenting naivety. Nancy Reagan hadn’t implored anyone to “Just Say No” yet. We didn’t even have cable, so we were still watching Brady Bunch and Leave It To Beaver reruns, not MTV. Apparently it never occurred to my parents that an AC/DC concert might be a marijuana-fest of epic proportions for most of the 15,000+ crazed teenagers in attendance.

The Phone Is NOT Dead! Pick It Up And Make Some Money!

Written by Rich Harshaw.

October 1, 2003.

That was the day that life officially changed forever for many home improvement and remodeling companies. That’s the day the National Do Not Call Registry began enforcing penalties on infringers of the new Do Not Call Law. Suddenly, thousands of companies in the industry needed to find a new way to generate home improvement leads.

You could say it was the day the phone died.

Or did it?
